FIRST STEPS

FIRST STEPS  Ages 5-7
Taught by Laurie Dehmlow

A preparatory class for private lessons on any instrument or voice class. Highly recommended before starting traditional lessons. Appropriate before, or in combination with, the Suzuki program. The core curriculum is based on the Kodaly and Dalcroze methods and lays a solid foundation for rhythm reading skills. Children sing, move, draw, and play games and rhythm instruments. Through aural, visual and kinesthetic activities the elements of rhythm are experienced and internalized and then presented as the written symbols of the musical language. Children learn beat, rhythm, note names and values through 16th notes, duple and triple meter. Elements of ear training, melody and melodic movement are internalized and then presented as the written symbols of the musical language. Children learn pentatonic and diatonic scales, solfege, moveable “DO”, the fiveline staff, and melodic movement in steps and skips.

The course covers 25 weeks (three consecutive terms). Class meets for 1 hour once a week.
